Anglian Water Partners with Schneider Electric to Drive Smart Business Future
Anglian Water live with Schneider Electric smart water solution. Basis of OT / IT convergence initiative.
LONDON – Sept. 6, 2016 – Schneider Electric, the global specialist in energy management and automation, today announced Anglian Water, the largest water supply and water recycling utility in England and Wales by geographic area, has implemented two Schneider Electric Industry solutions: a wireless telemetry and a smart water solution.
Anglian Water operates in a particularly challenging market. Its supply demand balance is under threat from a number of issues, including climate change, growth and sustainability. The UK’s mature water industry largely relies on a stressed, ageing, water infrastructure, with the added pressure of a rising population (29% growth over the last 25 years, with one million new homes expected in the next 25 years), growing water scarcity (driest area in the UK, with an average yearly rainfall of 600mm) and the risk of abstraction licenses being reduced to ensure that water sources remain stable. In addition, utilities must adhere to a number of regulations on water quality, leakage and service enforced by Ofwat (the economic regulator of the water sector in England and Wales), the Drinking Water Inspectorate, the Environment Agency and the Consumer Council for Water.
Anglian Water embarked on a significant operation to replace its wireless telemetry system with a Schneider Electric solution – the largest UHF telemetry system that exists in Western Europe today. Schneider Electric’s StruxureWare SCADA Expert ClearSCADA solution was implemented, referred internally as an Integrated Remote Intelligence Service (IRIS) system. This was used to handle real-time wireless data transmission, providing a software platform for the telemetry system.
In order to get a true view of the business, it was critical that all the main systems could interoperate and facilitate access to pools of disparate data which could be combined to provide real business insight. This solution became the basis to converge their OT (operations technology) and IT systems.
“Implementations on the scale of one we have just completed are hugely complex and fraught with risk. However, the way we have worked collaboratively with Schneider has been fantastic and a great example of what a truly integrated team can achieve,” said Matt Walker, Strategic Program Manager, Anglian Water.
